What I’m currently reading and watching

I read horror year round but love to really overdose during October. Here are a few things I enjoyed this week…

Recent Reads:

Exiles by Mason Coile

I grabbed this with zero expectations but a craving for sci-fi horror. A locked room mystery set on Mars…three humans, three robots, and maybe something else…At 230 pages, Exiles was an absorbing one-evening read.

The Hunger We Pass Down by Jen Sookfong Lee

I’m halfway through this strange story about generational trauma. Single mother Alice doesn’t have time to keep up with life until someone starts cleaning her house in the middle of the night. Interwoven is the story of Alice’s ancestor, a Chinese comfort woman. I’m reading this one slowly because it’s heavy and dark, but it’s fantastic so far.

Recent Watches:

I’m in an international horror mood this week. It’s always fun to traumatize myself in another language.

Handling the Undead (2024, Norway)

I love a sad Nordic film. One summer day in Oslo, the dead come back to life. It’s a quiet, heartbreaking take on zombies.

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018, Korea)

I’ve heard about this one for years and finally got up the courage to watch it.  Yep, turns out it really is that scary.  Instant regrets.

Make Some Noise (Season 4)

My favourite silly improv comedy show is back — the perfect antidote to the spooky, sad stuff. If you love Whose Line is it Anyway? and haven’t seen Make Some Noise yet, check it out.

What have you been reading or watching? I’d love any recommendations in the comments.
